<p dir="ltr">Bharti Airtel Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal assured Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio that the ongoing Point of Interconnect (PoIs) issue will be resolved within few weeks, even as the<a href="http://telecomtalk.info/jio-says-top-telcos-still-not-providing-new-interconnection-capacity-to-hamper-entry/157300/"> 4G entrant claimed “all talk- no action</a> on augmentation in operational interconnection capacity in last 15 days.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Mittal’s comments comes after the telecom regulator, Trai, took a strict view of ongoing spat between Reliance Jio and top telcos- Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular.</p>
<p dir="ltr">In an interaction with ET Now, Mittal however claimed that the point of interconnect was a non-existent issue, and it has suddenly become unnecessarily a big issue. “I have told my team and sent messages to Mukesh (Ambani) and his team. Let’s ignore and resolve this. Every passing day and every passing week this will get resolved,” he added.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Reliance Jio, which made a big bang entry into the sector offering free voice calls and data at rock-bottom price, has been accusing top telcos for not providing adequate interconnection points, which it said was leading to around 10 crore call failures on a daily basis.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Trai yesterday said it will take action against telecom operators if found guilty for compromising on service quality.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“You have to keep in mind 5th September was their commercial launch. 2000 PoIs have been provided and more are being provided. You can’t judge this industry in 10 days time…. It (Jio’s 4G service) was all India launch at one go. It’s a size and scale that is very big. It’s also a fact that the launch was free voice and four months of free data…We have a asymmetric traffic of 10 times to 1. We have to manage our own networks. We have to ensure that quality of service of my customers is not going down,” Mittal said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">In a separate interview to media, Mittal claimed that Bharti Airtel was well placed to take it on Reliance Jio, given its strong execution over the years, customer focus and spectrum footprint, but accepted Jio as a tough competitor.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Downplaying Jio’s disruptive free voice and data tariffs, Mittal said that bundled tariff plans would be the norm for the industry with protecting average revenue per user (ARPU) the main focus of telcos in India. He added that voice business will decline going forward and data will be the growth driver.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He however is hoping that the regulator will look into free services being offered by Jio under the commercial launch for four month. “Let this period pass through and I hope Trai will look in to this aspect of predatory pricing and we have already requested to Trai to look in to it,” he said.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Over the past decade, <a href="http://telecomtalk.info/tag/twitter">Twitter</a> has evolved from a 140-character text message to a platform of creative expression featuring photos, videos, hashtags, GIFs, etc. The progress continues, the latest change is to make tweeting even more flexible by changing how it counts characters. Twitter is exempting @names in replies, media attachments such as photos, GIFs, videos and polls from the 140 character limit. The new limit has officially come into limit.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Lately, Twitter has been trying to surge its user base. The changes in character limit are one move Twitter adopted to make it appealing to the users.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The announcement first came in May this year. “This is the most notable change we’ve made in recent times around conversation in particular, and around giving people the full expressiveness of the 140 characters,” Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey told <i>The Verge</i> in May. Twitter expects to increase the engagement between people due to this change. Dorsey praised the 140 character limit of as a “beautiful constraint”. The constraint makes people more creative in expressing their thoughts, enhances brevity in the delivery of message and speed.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Meanwhile, Twitter also has announced its plans to lay off some employees of its Bengaluru center. It is also halting the engineering works at Bengaluru. While at a report by <i><a href="http://indianexpress.com/article/technology/tech-news-technology/twitter-to-lay-off-nearly-20-employees-at-bengaluru-office/">Indian Express</a></i> confirms that only the employees part of ZipDial (an Indian mobile communications startup bought by Twitter last year) will be affected, another report by <i><a href="http://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/twitter-shuts-down-development-centre-in-bengaluru-116091901316_1.html">Business Standard</a></i> said that is shutting down its Bengaluru development center. The reason cited is the falling revenue.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Twitter had witnessed a fall in revenue in the quarter ended in June 2016. The social media platform had only lesser advertiser demand. The revenue growth fell for the eighth straight quarter. Twitter is facing a large competition from players like Facebook.</p>

The <u style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; word-wrap: break-word;">active base of the merged unit will be far less than third largest Idea Cellular</u> which has near to 160 million active customers on its network.</div>

Though, prices of 4G data will be higher than Jio with 3G fallback benefits offering better data network overall.</div>

<p dir="ltr">Reliance <a href="http://telecomtalk.info/category/general/reliance-jio-2/">Jio</a> and Bharti Airtel have kicked off a war of words on Sunday accusing each other over the ongoing interconnection points and mobile number portability (MNP) issue. Jio on Sunday has again alleged that Airtel was abusing its market dominance for not providing sufficient interconnection points, besides restricting mobile number portability (MNP) requests.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><img src="http://telecomtalk.info/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mobile-india.png"></p>
<p dir="ltr">The Mukesh Ambani-led telco further said that more than two crore calls are failing everyday between Jio and Airtel’s networks, as the latter telco has provided less than one-fourth of the necessary interconnect points to complete calls.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“It appears that the QoS (Quality of Service) will continue to suffer and Indian customers will be denied the benefits of superior and free voice services as a result of such anti-competitive behavior,” Jio added.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The country’s leading telco strongly denied the charges and termed Jio’s allegations as a ploy to cover up some technical issues in their own network, which is causing call failures, by constantly blaming other operators. “Call drops or the lack of VoLTE stabilization should not be hidden behind the issue of POIs, which are being augmented at regular and quick intervals,” the telco said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">On Saturday, Airtel had said that it will provide more points of interconnect or PoIs well ahead of the contractual obligation. It had claimed that the capacity will be sufficient to serve more than 15 million customers, which is higher than than the Jio’s total subscriber base.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Jio claimed that Airtel was insisting on certain unilateral deviations from the Interconnection Agreement between the parties with respect to installation of one-way E1s as against both-way E1s. One-way E1s are typically installed between similar sized networks.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“It is apparent that Airtel continues to abuse its market dominance by imposing onerous conditions which will imminently hinder RJIL’s ability to efficiently utilize the additional E1s. It appears that the QoS will continue to suffer,” Jio said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Airtel however clarified that the additional PoIs now need to be physically connected and tested by both parties. “We have already requested Jio’s cooperation in this regard. Airtel’s network teams across circles are ready and waiting for Jio to commence the testing,” it said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Mukesh Ambani-led telco said that urgent steps are required to be taken in the interest of customers of both operators, adding that it is unfortunate that Trai’s intervention was required for Airtel to resume augmentation of POIs, which it ought to have done by itself in compliance with its license terms.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“TRAI regulation does not provide for 90 days to adhere to QOS parameters. TRAI in fact instructed the incumbent operators to urgently provide requisite interconnection capacities to maintain QoS parameters and not to make this subject to any contingencies or restrictions,” Jio further added.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The 4G entrant also said that Airtel has also been blocking the MNP facility for its subscribers who wish to subscribe to Jio services on baseless and unsubstantiated grounds. “This is another example of disregard of license terms and its obligations… This is again an anti-competitive move aimed at stifling a new operator, denying the Indian customers the benefit of choice of service provider. This is against public interest and fair play,” Jio said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Replying on the accusation made by Jio on MNP, Airtel said that it is processing all requests as per guidelines.<br>
“Airtel ports-in and ports-out thousands of customers every day from across operators, and the allegation of blocking 69 odd port-out requests from Jio sounds rather flimsy,” Airtel said.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Gionee S6s is a latest “selfie-centric” smartphone by the Chinese manufacturer. The device was launched a month ago featuring an 8MP selfie camera with LED flash, which is being marketed as its USP. Before the S6s, <a href="http://telecomtalk.info/tag/gionee">Gionee</a> has been keeping a low profile with Marathon series as its front-runner. To cash on the growing craze for selfies, Gionee launched the S6s, and we got a chance to review the device.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><b>Specifications</b></p>
<p dir="ltr">The Gionee S6s features a 5.5-inch Full HD in-cell display with 2.5D curved edge glass and a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It is powered by a 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6753 octa-core chipset coupled with 3GB of RAM. The S6s bears 32GB of internal storage, which is expandable up to 128GB via microSD card. It sports a 13-megapixel IMX258 rear camera with PDAF and f/2.0 aperture. There is an 8-megapixel selfie camera onboard with ‘selfie flash’ (something that Gionee has come up with and is also getting it trademark for future references), f/2.2 aperture and 5P lens. A 3,300mAh battery backs the device. The camera app is full of features making it a camera-focused device.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based Amigo 3.2 UI. The smartphone comes packed with a variety of pre-loaded apps such as the UC Browser, TrueCaller, WhatsApp, Danger Dash, and much more. Regarding connectivity, it supports Hybrid dual-SIM, 4G LTE with VoLTE (LTE (FDD) Band 3/Band 5, LTE (TDD) Band 40), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, and MicroUSB 2.0 port. It will be up for sale in Gold, Rose Gold, and Silver color options. A 3,150mAh battery backs it.</p>

<p dir="ltr"><b>So, what’s good in the Gionee S6s?</b></p>
<p dir="ltr">We used the device for a couple of months. The camera functions are good, and we were impressed by its selfie clicking abilities. It has got a LED front-flash, which ensures that you get bright selfies every time. More than the front camera, we liked its outdoor image quality of its rear camera (as you can see in the pictures below). Regarding design, we think that it has got an uncanny resemblance with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3. But it does look good with a slim body that fits the bill. Thankfully, Gionee bundles the device with a transparent plastic cover, which saved the day so many times during our usage. The smooth back is good to hold, but it is a hell lot of slippery. So, if you buy this device, we would like to advise you to use it with cover.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The performance of the Gionee S6s is pretty decent, and we did not face any issues. However, we do think that at a price tag of 17k, the 1.3GHz is not a good deal. The battery backup is of 12 hours, which you can extend by a couple of hours through the power saving mode.</p>

<p dir="ltr"><b>What’s not good?</b></p>
<p dir="ltr">Throughout the duration of our usage, we came across the delay in camera app whenever we switched to the video. Also, some of the features or modes given in the camera have no real benefit. The Amigo UI is not very efficient, the lack of app drawer is felt now and then. Particularly for Android users, the lack of app drawer could be frustrating.</p>
<p dir="ltr">We also tried to play some top end games on the Gionee S6s, but were disappointed by stuttering graphics and heating issues. Given its underwhelming performance specs, we couldn’t ask for more. We think that Gionee should have focused on the performance of the device instead of just focusing on the camera. Also, Amigo UI needs a lot of tweaks to make it likable.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><b>What’s our take?</b></p>
<p dir="ltr">If asked about camera performance, we like the Gionee S6s, but its mediocre performance in other segments does not seem justifiable for the 17k price tag. So, for anyone who just wants a good camera smartphone without caring about other features, can go for the Gionee S6s.</p>

<p dir="ltr">UK-based telecoms Group Vodafone is reportedly preparing to pump equity infusion worth over $3 billion in its India unit to replace debt, even as continues to work on India unit’s initial public offering (IPO). Vodafone India’s standalone net debt for 2015-16 was about Rs 81,500 crore.</p>

<p dir="ltr">“Overseas market conditions make it favorable to replace the debt here with equity as the return on equity is higher here and it will cut the debt servicing costs,” said one of the people quoted by Economic Times.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Vodafone, which is currently the largest foreign direct investor in the country, is expected to raise Rs 13,300-20,000 crore through its IPO. It is currently reviewing the timelines for this IPO, “wary of value erosion due to a tariff war unleashed by Jio”, people familiar with the matter told the publication.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“The company is evaluating if it should further push back its IPO as the market conditions are bleak for the next few months,” one of the people said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The move coincides with Reliance Jio’s entry, which is expected to shake up the dynamics in the market. Further, the development comes at a time when the telco prepares for the upcoming spectrym auction, where is likely to bid aggressively to increase its 4G spectrum holdings.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Vodafone, which has a total 302MHz spectrum, may spend as much as $2 billion on acquiring spectrum. It has 4G spectrum in nine of the country’s 22 circles, and lags behind Jio and market leader Bharti Airtel’s pan-India holdings.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Vodafone currently has 19.3% share of the market, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. It is currently in a dispute over a tax demand of over Rs 14,000 crore, including penalties and interest, related to the acquisition of Hutchison’s stake in the company in 2007.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Indian government will sell spectrum, valued at Rs 5.6 lakh crore at the reserve price, starting October 1, including airwaves in the 4G and 3G bands.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Soon after <a href="http://telecomtalk.info/after-airtel-and-idea-vodafone-to-increase-points-of-interconnect-with-jio/157171/">Vodafone</a> announced its plan to increase the Points of Interconnect (POIs) with Reliance Jio, the latter has released a statement welcoming the decision. However, similar to the <a href="http://telecomtalk.info/jio-retaliates-to-airtels-claim-on-asymmetric-traffic-flow-as-baseless/157107/">statement</a> it released after Airtel’s announcement, RJio has pointed out the Vodafone did not resort to favorable action even after communicating for several months on POI issue.</p>

<p dir="ltr">“The situation has deteriorated significantly in the last few weeks, with over 80 calls failing out of every 100 call attempts. In the last 10 days alone, over 15 crore RJIL calls have failed on the Vodafone network,” RJio said in the statement.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“While RJIL has rolled out a state-of-the-art network, the benefits of superior voice technology have been denied to Indian customers due to the POI congestion. Indian customers have not been able to enjoy RJIL’s free voice offer as a result of such anti-competitive behavior of incumbent operators,” it added.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It has also mentioned that Vodafone and other incumbent operators have been blocking the mobile number portability (MNP) facility for the subscribers who wish to port to Jio. Such actions from the incumbents have gone against the directions of TRAI. RJio has ended the statement saying that it expects the POIs to increase with immediate effect.</p>
<p dir="ltr">This tussle between Jio and incumbents has been going on for some time now. <a href="http://telecomtalk.info/interconnection-saga-trai-orders-top-telcos-jio-to-submit-call-details/157170/">TRAI</a>, today, has ordered all telecom operators to submit call details to examine the traffic pattern on their networks. This would help TRAI to scrutinize the allegations of RJio against incumbents.</p>

<p dir="ltr">One more incumbent operator has agreed to increase the points of interconnect with <a href="http://telecomtalk.info/category/general/reliance-jio-2/">Jio</a>. Vodafone is the latest to join the array, after Airtel and Idea Cellular, that the company has released a statement announcing its decision to increase the POIs between Reliance Jio and Vodafone by three times of what it provides now.</p>

<p dir="ltr">“Vodafone India has always provided Points of Interconnect to other operators for all their fair, reasonable and legitimate requirements and will continue to do so,” the statement said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Following guidance from TRAI and clarifications from Jio regarding its commercial launch, Vodafone India has decided to increase the Points of Interconnect (POIs) between the two operators by thrice and accordingly increase the capacity to connect. Vodafone is hopeful that all issues that it has raised with TRAI and Jio will be duly considered and resolved at the earliest,” the company said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">In the statement, Vodafone has also called for “level playing” between providers in offering the services to the subscribers.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The decision of incumbents to offer POIs came after the regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) called for a meeting between all four parties last Friday. <p dir="ltr">Even as India’s top telecom operators Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular allocate more points of interconnections to <a href="http://telecomtalk.info/category/general/reliance-jio-2/">Reliance Jio</a> to resolve the issue, The Indian telecom regulator, Trai, has ordered these telcos, along with BSNL and MTNL to submit call details to examine the traffic pattern on their networks.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The move will help the regulator examine allegations by Reliance Jio against incumbent telecom operators that they were not providing proper interconnection for its service. Interconnection is typically required to enable mobile users to make calls to customers of other telecom networks. A telecom carrier levies inter-connection usage charge (IUC) for each incoming call it gets from subscriber of another network.</p>
<p dir="ltr">According to a PTI report, the regulator had asked these telcos to submit traffic details for examining purpose under interconnection usage paper. The telcos however did not submit even after reminder, which made Trai issue an order for them. An official source told the newswire that these telcos have to submit data by September 16.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Mukesh Ambani owned Jio accused the top telcos for not providing sufficient inter-connection ports which it said was leading to call drops. Jio launched its services on September 5, The top telcos Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular however claimed that free calling service being offered by Jio was leading to huge incoming traffic on their network due to which they have to incur huge cost and impacted services for their own customers.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Both Airtel and Idea this week announced that they will augment the number of POIs allocated to Jio. However, both telcos urged Trai to find a way to curb the “massive asymmetric traffic” and ensure that receiving networks are not “abused by tsunami of free traffic” from Reliance Jio.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Jio yesterday rejected the allegation and said that outgoing traffic is less than 2 calls per customer per hour even during peak traffic and these calls are not to one operator but distributed over all the operators. It said that 75% calls made from its network, with most of them on incumbents’ networks, are failing due to insufficient interconnection ports.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Even though these are the official price cut rates published by Apple, but we expect third-party retailers to sell these devices at even lower rates. To conclude, we think that Apple has slashed the pricing of these phones to make way for iPhone 7 lineup launch in India, which is slated for October 7. The iPhone 7 base model starts at 32GB storage, unlike the iPhone 6s whose base model came with 16GB storage.</p>

According to the latest leak, a Le Pro 3 variant is said to feature an 8GB RAM. As per the leak, there is a high-end variant of Le Pro 3 smartphone featuring a 5.7-inch display of 2560 x 1440 pixels resolution, a quad-core Snapdragon 821 processor paired with Adreno 530 GPU, 8GB LPDDR4 RAM, and 256GB internal storage. The phone will run Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) out-of-the-box with EUI on top.</p>
<p dir="ltr">In terms of camera, the high-end Le Pro 3 smartphone will boast of 13MP dual cameras with dual-tone LED Flash at the rear and 16MP camera in the front. For connectivity, the phone is expected to support 4G VoLTE, WiFi 802.11ac (2.4/5 GHz), Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, USB Type-C. A 5000mAh battery and a fingerprint sensor are also expected to be integrated into the smartphone.</p>

<p dir="ltr">In the wake of the Government’s call to make panic button mandatory for all mobile phones sold in India from January 1, Videocon has introduced the feature on its smartphone “Videocon Cube 3”. The smartphone comes with an emergency response app “SOS-Be Safe” that includes Alert, Walk With Me, and Reach On Time features. The app utilizes power button as the panic button to send alert to the numbers added in the emergency list at the time of requirement.</p>

The <b>Reach On Time</b> feature, on the other hand, will allow the user to set a location such as home/office and a normal travel timing to the destination. If they do not reach the selected destination within the time mentioned, an alert will be sent to their immediate contacts. The <b>Alert</b>feature is an alarm function, using which the users can enable/disable the power button to alarm and can customize the message they want to send when notifying their emergency contacts.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Other specifications of Videocon Cube 3 include a 5” HD IPS display, 3GB RAM, 13MP rear camera, 4G VoLTE, and a 3000mAh battery.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Reliance Communications (RCom) on Wednesday reported net profit of Rs 54 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2016, an increase of 6.3 percent from Rs 51 crore in an year earlier period.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The Anil Ambani-led telco’s consolidated first quarter revenue declined 3.8 percent at Rs. 5,361 crore from Rs 5,570 crore in the same period last year. Revenue from India operations declined 2.5 percent at Rs 4,693 crore from Rs. 4,812 crore in previous year.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The first quarter’s consolidated EBITDA stood at Rs 1,560 crore, down 17.7 percent from Rs. 1,897 crore in previous year. Indian operation’s EBITDA stood at Rs 1,353 crore, down 20.8 percent from Rs 1,709 crore in previous year.<br>
RCom’s global operations revenue increased 5.3 percent at Rs 1,185 crore from Rs 1,125 crore in the same quarter last year.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The telco’s average revenue per unit (ARPU) went up 5.7 percent on an yearly basis to Rs 148.RPM increased 1.6% on an yearly basis at 45.2 paisa.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The total data customer base has grown 9.9 percent year-on-year to 38.9 million, including 25.4 million 3G/4G customers in the first quarter. The total data traffic at 102 billion MB went up 10.4 percent on yearly basis, increased due to increase in data subscribers, the company said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Total minutes of usage however went down 4.8% year-on-year to 100 billion. The telco has a customer base of over 107 million including over 2.6 million individual overseas retail customers. RCom corporate clientele includes over 39,000 Indian and multinational corporations including small and medium enterprises and over 290 global, regional and domestic carriers.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The telecom carrier on Wednesday inked a definitive agreement with promoters of Aircel, Maxis Communications Berhad (MCB), for the merger of their Indian wireless businesses. The merger will be the largest-ever consolidation in the Indian telecom sector, and it will create a strong operator that will rank among the top 3 operators by revenues in 12 important circles, RCom said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The combined entity will enjoy substantial benefits of scale driving significant revenue growth, and capex and opex synergies with an NPV of Rs 20,000 crore or $3 billion.</p>
